remember album covers?

the watsons love to reminisce. and we know you do too. this time, we’re going back to an artform that’s gone, but never forgotten. the album cover. do any of the watsons’ picks match your own?

rooty

my album cover is rooty by basement jaxx. my explanation is kinda that i don't have an explanation. it just makes me happy whenever i see it. the choice of an albino gorilla (named snowflake, it was a real gorilla...since passed on unfortunately) as the main art for the cover, along with all the neon splashes sets the perfect tone for the album. fun and random. plus it was the lead off design for all the subsequent single artwork (they used the same illustrator for all the songs from that album and i thought his style was amazing. photorealistic but very stylized...almost like a high end airbrush). this was a tough decision, but i think this is what my heart wants me to say.

ping floyd
dark side of the moon

i think i'd have to choose one of my favorite albums of all time: pink floyd - dark side of the moon... the artwork (designed by george hardie) perfectly complements the overall mood and themes explored on the album - which is, in my opinion, what any good cover art should do... the central image of the prism seems to me highly symbolic of a lens of self discovery, introspection, and personal revelations of what life is, or can be; as the the beam of light passes through the prism, its true nature, being made up of a spectrum of colors, is revealed... i also admire the use of simple, clean design to create an instantly recognizable icon.

the white album

i had to choose an album i actually owned and loved. and for me, the design of the white album is as iconic as the music. the fact that it came to be called by a name relating to its design, rather than its title, seemed breakthrough to me. and the serial numbers, the font, the minimalism were all a departure from every other album cover i'd seen. i loved it then and love it still.

staring at the sea -- the singles

it's all about the perfectly-cropped close-up of the weathered old fisherman 'staring at the sea.' his face is like a map of the ocean and you are left to imagine what those eyes have seen in his lifetime. and because he's staring right at you, it makes it provocative and a tad uncomfortable. the photo selection also happens to be slightly depressing and scary for a 'greatest hits' album, but that's the cure for you.

my favorite album cover is also my favorite album. i'm not awestruck by politicians or athletes, but her music and artistry are unlike anyone's. so, when she signed the album for me, it was really special. it's a nice piece of memorabilia that i have proudly displayed in my family room.
